Mind-Body Connection
At Solstice we are sensitive to the connection between body and mind. Research has shown that good nutrition and cardiovascular exercise have a very positive impact on emotional well-being and brain functioning such as concentration, memory, focus and attention. Simply put, when we feel good physically we feel better emotionally, and we think more clearly. We have implemented these findings into our programming at Solstice by including several interventions aimed at improving the physical health of the young ladies we serve. These include fitness and nutrition components described below.
Nutrition
Upon admission each of our students undergoes a health, nutrition and fitness assessment. With the help of our nutritionist and personal trainers the student develops personal goals focused on improving her diet and physical fitness. She completes a nutrition class to educate her about healthy choices, and the impact of her diet choices on her body and mind. She will also share in meal planning and meal preparation to provide experiential learning opportunities and skills she can utilize throughout her life. With education, self-awareness and journal keeping, she will come to recognize the impact of her diet choices on her emotional state and mood changes. These “experiences” with nutrition have a lasting impact on young ladies as they develop a much improved sense of self-efficacy in managing how they feel and look, both physically and emotionally.
Fitness
As each young lady undergoes a fitness assessment and begins to participate in regular workouts,
they also develop fitness goals aimed at improving their cardio-vascular fitness, strength and flexibility. They participate in daily
aerobic workouts including running, biking, and aerobic classes. They also participate in other weekly workouts including Yoga, Pilates,
dance, and weight training. Our students will advance to the point of choosing to participate in fitness-based community events such
as a 5K run, triathlon or century bike ride. The improvements in their physical condition will have immeasurable effects on their
mood, self-esteem and sense of self-efficacy.
